Safety
More Than a Program
A lot of companies have great safety programs.
DPR has created a safety culture.
DPR nurtures an injury free environment (IFE) where everyone truly believes that zero incidents is an achievable goal, and data, including incident rates, recordable injuries and leading indicators, are measured and evaluated daily.
Safety in Numbers
- In 2006, DPR had a recordable incident rate of 1.88 based on more than four million hours worked.
- Based on nearly 800 surveys, our customers ranked DPR 42 percent better than “Best in Class” (their best previous experience) in safety.
- DPR has a California experience modification rating (EMR) of .36 and National Council of Compensation Insurance (NCCI) global rate of .37.
- 95 percent of 818 projects in 2005 were completed injury-free.
As a company, we are dedicated to looking at leading indicators, those elements that lead to incidents occurring, and remove them from the equation before they can come to actuality. We do that through training, instilling and reinforcing safe behaviors.
Injury Free and Proud
DPR's IFE program centers around consistent communication, education and training for the entire project team, including owners, architects and subcontractors, as well as provides the tools and information people need to make informed decisions through detailed root cause analysis and pre-task planning. The result of DPR's proactive IFE efforts is a robust, value-based safety program that looks upstream at leading indicators and root causes to produce exceptional downstream results that have made the company one of the safest contractors in the nation.
Technology Safe Zone
DPR’s SafetyNet, a Palm-based safety audit system used on all projects, allows team members to collect raw data observed on each jobsite for instantaneous analysis over the network to provide leading indicators of potential risks. Deviations from the ideal range in each recorded indicator increase the likelihood of a claim on a project. Utilizing this up-to-the-moment technology helps our disciplined and passionate safety professionals to develop prevention plans for accident avoidance.
Everyone has a Role In Safety... Even You
As with any part of the project delivery process, customer participation is a vital component to achieving the ultimate goal. We hope that you will:
- Pre-qualify contractors with safety as a key factor in the process and support the pre-qualification of subcontractors.
- Ask questions, not only about rates and injury trends but also about the vehicles in place for looking ahead, as well as how safety standards and techniques are communicated between the field and the office.
- Recognize that, from a business standpoint, safety is not mutually exclusive and goes hand-in-hand with quality, schedule and budget. Accidents on the job can have a tremendous impact on the quality of the work, add downtime or re-training time to the schedule and open the door to potential lawsuits.
- Meet regularly with project teams and actively participate in a way that holds all members accountable.
